SAN FRANCISCO — A Tulare County judge is facing possible removal from office over allegations he pursued an inappropriate relationship with his clerk—texting her excessively, buying her expensive gifts and threatening to commit suicide when she told him to stop contacting her.

The Commission on Judicial Performance announced the inquiry Monday into Judge Valeriano Saucedo of the Tulare County Superior Court. The initiation of formal proceedings is an early step in a disciplinary process that could ultimately lead to Saucedo being removed from the bench or lesser sanctions. It’s a rare and serious move—the commission generally launches a formal inquiry against a judge only once or twice a year.
