SAN FRANCISCO — For the second year running, U.S. lawmakers are trying to make it illegal for businesses to punish consumers who leave negative reviews online. The Consumer Review Freedom Act, or the so-called “Yelp” bill, is intended to give peace of mind and free speech protections to consumers who write truthful, disparaging reviews on websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor, according to the measure’s sponsors.
The bill was introduced Wednesday by Reps. Eric Swalwell, D-California, Darrell Issa, R-California, Brad Sherman, D-California, and Blake Farenthold, R-Texas. Swalwell introduced similar legislation last year.
