SAN FRANCISCO — The U.S. Supreme Court won’t overturn an Alameda County program that requires pharmaceutical companies to pay for the safe disposal of unused prescription drugs.

The high court on Tuesday denied a petition for a writ of certoriari filed in December by lawyers for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and other trade groups opposed to the measure. The case was seen as a test for local government policies that embrace extended producer responsibility, or the concept that manufacturers should be on the hook for mitigating the environmental impact of their products.
