Last month, Los Angeles lawyer David Pasternak was elected the 91st president of the California State Bar. When he’s sworn in at the bar’s annual meeting in October, he’ll take the reins of an organization battered by the firing of—and lawsuit filed by—its top executive, a scathing report from the state auditor and scrutiny from legislators.

It’s nothing particularly new for Pasternak, who says he’s been appointed as a receiver, a special master and a bankruptcy court custodian hundreds of times since 1982. He talked about his plans for his coming term as president, which will including working with a new executive director, general counsel and chief operating officer.
