SAN FRANCISCO — For associates at Fenwick & West, there was no want of work last year. There may, however, have been some want of a break.
Fueled by tech boom transaction work, Fenwick saw revenue per lawyer jump 15 percent last year. The downside to all that upside is an associate army that feels overworked and underpaid. Too much work may be a great problem for a law firm’s managers to have, but it’s still a problem—especially when younger lawyers are less tethered to the traditional career trajectory.
