SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown Wednesday night vetoed legislation restricting drone flight over private property, saying the provisions would open the door to litigation.

SB 142, backed by an eclectic mix of interests, including the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse and the American Chemistry Council, would have barred unpiloted aerial vehicles from flying up to 350 feet over someone’s property without his or her permission. The bill’s author, Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, said the legislation was a tool to set trespass rules for the fast-growing drone industry.
