SAN FRANCISCO — David Dekker will serve as the next chairman of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, the firm said Monday.

Dekker, a 59-year-old civil litigation and dispute-resolution partner in Washington, D.C., was elected Monday and will take over leadership of the more than-500-lawyer firm in January 2017. The announcement comes as Pillsbury is in exploratory merger talks with Chadbourne & Parke, a 400-lawyer firm based in New York.
