As the economy continues to bounce back, law firm hiring of lateral associate candidates has increased. This increase may stem from two causes. First, after years of downturn, there is pent up demand for labor. Second, many law firms are realizing that they are understaffed. Either way, legal headhunters are on the prowl as law firms approach the associate ranks of other law firms.

For associates, increased hiring is welcomed news. Many were hired during a depressed legal job market and were forced to take positions below where they wanted to be and at salaries below what they expected, despite their significant student loan debt. Now, the opportunity for upward mobility with higher pay appears to be a realistic possibility.
