Judge Anne-Christine Massullo, a former federal prosecutor appointed to the bench in 2006, has served as supervising judge of San Francisco’s Unified Family Court since January. This summer, she presided over an emotional trial that will determine ownership rights to the frozen embryos of a divorced couple. The husband wants the embryos destroyed and the wife hopes to use them. Massullo has yet to rule. In a recent email interview with The Recorder, she describes the hard days in family court, her vantage on the U.S. attorney’s office, and why she takes joy in accessorizing.
What was the most difficult part of transitioning from your role as advocate to judge? The most difficult part was adapting to the more informal way in which state court criminal matters are handled, and the last-minute motions and issues that surrounded many trials.
