SAN FRANCISCO — Kirupa Pushparaj was Square Inc.’s first intellectual property lawyer when he joined the payments company in 2013. Today, he leads its IP team and volunteers on its culinary staff for fun.
Pushparaj worked as a design engineer for Intel Corp. and as a Perkins Coie attorney before joining Square, where he blends his engineering and legal training. He recently sat down with The Recorder to discuss Square’s stance on nonpracticing entities, his relationship with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and how the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on patent eligibility in Alice v. CLS Bank changed the patent landscape.
