SACRAMENTO — Three state lawmakers have introduced legislation that they say will thwart the kind of mass disclosure of student records recently ordered by a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.

The specific language of Assembly Bill 2097 is still being drafted. But Assembly authors Mike Gatto, D-Silver Lake; Lorena Gonzales, D-San Diego; and Melissa Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore, say at the very least they want to stop public schools and school districts from collecting students’ Social Security numbers. The legislators say they’re also looking at possible restrictions on accessing kids’ medical histories, mental health assessments and disciplinary records.
