Law is a profession racked by stress, tough deadlines and intense pressure. This environment sometimes leads to a “work hard, play hard” culture, by which attorneys look for ways to blow off steam. When months of hard work and long hours end with a big closing or trial victory, celebrating with a round of drinks (or even several) is par for the course.
Though it seems the norm, there is a dark side to this issue: those situations in which “letting off steam” and “celebrating a win” lead to substance abuse. Experts have long pointed to evidence that attorneys are more likely to have dependency issues or mental health issues than many other professionals.
