David Powell, a financial services litigator, left Reed Smith last month to start a Northern California outpost for McGuireWoods, which has its headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. Powell spoke with The Recorder about the new office and about the current San Francisco lateral climate.

Is there a lot of brand building that you have to do in Northern California because the firm is new to this region? Not so much with the core clients. The core client base already knows the firm very well, which is the reason that we all joined this firm. I think lawyers, generally in San Francisco, may not have heard of the firm just because we didn’t have an office here until very recently. But it depends on what practice area you’re in because certainly the name is well known in financial services and other areas.
