SAN FRANCISCO — For rookie lawyers at a big law firm, Fish & Richardson associates Holly Victorson and Emily Garff got a rare opportunity this month.

The first- and second-year associates helped argue a summary-judgment motion before U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh. “Arguing in court is the kind of skill where experience really is the best teacher,” said Garff, a second-year. “There’s just really no substitute.”
