SAN FRANCISCO — Families of five victims killed in attacks in Israel have filed a lawsuit seeking at least $1 billion from Facebook Inc. claiming the social network is providing support for Hamas militants to commit terrorist acts. The lawsuit, filed on Sunday in federal court in New York, claims that Facebook allows Hamas to recruit and radicalize potential terrorists and raise funds despite widespread criticism.

“Facebook is especially useful to Hamas because, among other things, it is provided free of charge, allows unlimited accounts and usage, offers the ability to push content to an enormous number of users instantaneously, provides the ability to communicate without disclosing location, enables like-minded users to connect and communicate, affords both public and private communications, and integrates other social media platforms and services,” the lawsuit said.
