SAN FRANCISCO—Orin Kerr, a prominent computer crime professor at the George Washington University Law School, and Marcia Hofmann, a former senior lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have signed on to represent a company battling Facebook Inc. in a closely watched Ninth Circuit case.

Kerr and Hofmann, who is now in private practice at Zeitgeist Law, filed a 15-page brief on behalf of Power Ventures Inc. late Tuesday asking the court for en banc review of a panel decision they say threatens stiff penalties—or even criminal prosecution—for venturing onto a third party’s website without permission.
