SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has denied class certification in a lawsuit against Google Inc.’s Nest Labs that claims the company over-hyped the ability of its Wi-Fi thermostat to lower consumers’ energy bills.
The suit against Nest, brought by lawyers at Bursor & Fisher in 2014, targets advertisements boasting that the device can slash up to 20 percent off of monthly electric bills—or $173 annually. It seeks damages for a nationwide class of consumers who bought the thermostats and were disappointed.
