Third-, fourth- and fifth-year associates at Am Law 200 firms nationwide are happier than ever, according to the American Lawyer’s Midlevel Associates Survey. And that held true in California. Overall satisfaction ratings in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley beat the national average composite score of 4.23, while San Francisco came in just a hair lower.

O’Melveny & Myers was a clear standout in the Golden State: its Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices received the highest scores in their respective regions, and its Los Angeles office came in second. Luann Simmons, managing partner of the firm’s San Francisco office, where associates gave their overall satisfaction an almost perfect rating of 4.92 out of 5, said the firm’s focus on hiring people who’d be pleasant to work with was the root of its success in the survey. But O’Melveny also has specific initiatives to make sure associates have insight into the office’s finances and strategic plan, as well as a voice of their own. Each of its offices has an associate counsel advisory committee, which hosts regular open forums where associates can share thoughts, concerns or questions about anything in the office. Simmons said she tries to meet with the ACAC chairs in her office once a week.
