SACRAMENTO — Malcolm Lucas, the former chief justice who brought collegiality and a conservative shift to a fractured California Supreme Court, died Wednesday, according to a statement released by his family. He was 89.

A Nixon appointee to the federal bench in Los Angeles, Lucas was appointed to the state high court in 1984 by Gov. George Deukmejian, his former Long Beach law firm partner. His 12-year tenure was marked by attempts to rebuild a politically shaken court and to strengthen and unify the judicial branch as a whole.
