STANFORD — Despite appearances to the contrary, U.S. District Judge Ronald Whyte of the Northern District of California hasn’t always been a patent law expert.

“When I became a federal judge, I’m not sure I knew what a patent was or I certainly didn’t anticipate getting involved in IP law,” Whyte confessed Tuesday to a crowd of 250 lawyers, judges and academics gathered at a symposium celebrating his 24-year judicial career and contributions to patent law.
