With associate compensation dominating the headlines over the past several months, partner compensation has managed to slip under the radar. This isn’t particularly surprising, however, given how uncomfortable discussions regarding partner pay can be for lawyers and their firms.

Despite the tendency to delay or even avoid such conversations, partnership compensation remains one of the most scrutinized decisions in a law practice. And recent data show that California partners are doing particularly well on the compensation front. According to one report published earlier this month by legal search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa, San Francisco-based partners saw a 55 percent compensation increase over the past two years (from $662,000 to $997,000), while those in Los Angeles saw a 38 percent increase in that same time (from $825,000 to $1.136 million).
