In the legal department of Upwork Inc., the online platform that connects freelancers with projects, you’ll find a poster in the popular “Keep Calm and _____” style. It reads “Keep Calm, I’m Your Lawyer” and was given to the lawyers by an employee.
The poster injected some fun into the workplace. But it also illustrates how Upwork’s lawyers approach counseling. They don’t want to be seen as impediments to progress. They want the business-side to approach them early and often. “It was put right above where the legal team sits,” says Upwork’s chief financial officer and general counsel Brian Levey says of the poster. “That act says it all from my perspective, how we’re enabling the business, how there is confidence in us, and how it’s a complete partnership. It was pretty cool.”
