SACRAMENTO — Opponents of a ballot initiative aimed at speeding up the death penalty appeals process asked the California Supreme Court late Tuesday to block the measure’s enforcement.
Former Attorney General John Van de Kamp and capital punishment opponent Ron Briggs say that Proposition 66, the so-called Death Penalty Reform and Savings Act, illegally infringes on judicial authority. The duo, represented by Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, also argues that the complex measure violates constitutional provisions barring initiatives from addressing more than one topic.
