SAN FRANCISCO — A pair of driver class actions against Uber Technologies Inc. that were once on the verge of being resolved for $84 million are now effectively stalled on the roadside.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of the Northern District of California, who swatted down the proposed $84 million settlement in August, said he would keep in place a stay in the California and Massachusetts lawsuits pending the outcome of several appeals. Chen said he would take stock again in February.
