The California Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that jurisdictional grounds can be the basis for tossing out a suit under the state’s anti-SLAPP statute, handing a victory to the California State Bar in a legal tussle with an attorney who is facing possible disbarment.

In a unanimous opinion, the state high court said that the lawsuit filed by Los Angeles attorney Patricia Barry against the State Bar of California in connection with a disciplinary proceeding was properly dismissed by the L.A. trial court judge under anti-SLAPP, short for “strategic lawsuits against public participation.” The decision reverses a 2013 opinion from the Second District Court of Appeal.
