SAN FRANCISCO — U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of the Northern District of California on Wednesday admonished federal prosecutors after they dropped without explanation charges against a dozen individuals swept up in a drug sting that defense attorneys said was tainted by racial bias.

“I hope that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will look at its processes to … discern potential patterns that might raise red flags,” Chen said in a hearing after agreeing to dismiss the charges against the defendants. “We’ve spent a lot of effort and a lot of time on this case to come to this result.”
