The exodus is just one of the changes happening at the East Bay’s largest firm. Crosby is also searching for a merger partner to extend its reach outside California, and several partners say Reed Smith — a Pittsburg-based firm with offices in the U.S. and the U.K. — is a contender.

Crosby has, over the past few years, absorbed several smaller firms — most recently, Oakland boutique firm Bay Venture Counsel — to ramp up its corporate practice. Meanwhile, the 230-attorney firm is thinning less profitable practice groups such as media law, and that change in direction has motivated some of the departures.
