A complex picture of the Walnut Creek judge emerged Monday at a rare hearing that will help determine if Van Voorhis will lose his gavel for misconduct. Among other things, the judge is accused of berating staff, jurors and attorneys. He is also accused of making an arbitrary ruling to see if an inexperienced prosecutor could “handle” it.

On Monday, the Commission on Judicial Performance began a hearing before a panel of special masters who will weigh the allegations. Later, a commission proceeding will determine what, if any, punishment the judge will face.
