Teveia Barnes, BASF’s executive director and general counsel, said lagging support from members and a decline in grants prompted the layoffs, which reflect about 16 percent of the 101-member staff.
“After 9/11, many of the foundations and individuals who have supported our programs in the past gave less or did not give at all this year,” Barnes said. “The hope was that the economy would turn around at some point, but it hasn’t.”
