On Thursday, establishment candidates for the State Bar Board of Governors went down to defeat, including two backed by Los Angeles’ politically powerful Breakfast Club, whose nominees had never lost until Cavanaugh, of Long Beach, set the precedent last year.

Even more telling, three of the four candidates endorsed by Cavanaugh, who angered fellow board members with a scathingly anti-Bar newspaper commentary in May, won election once the votes were tallied. All three of Cavanaugh’s winning favorites had talked about the alleged growing irrelevance of the State Bar and a need for “outsider” voices bringing fresh perspectives.
