The record amount of donations flowing to organizations like the American Red Cross and the World Trade Center Relief Fund is something she loves to see. But it’s also a source of concern for Stewart, who handles fund-raising for California Rural Legal Assistance Inc.
The nonprofit group provides education and legal help to low-income people throughout the state. Last year, more than 50 percent of the organization’s contributions came from corporate law firms that have made a tradition of funding legal aid groups. And those same firms are now volunteering many thousands of dollars to relief efforts in New York.
