In a ruling on the BALCO steroids-in-sports case, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found Wednesday that the government has a right to hold onto seized medical records even if search warrants didn’t specifically target them.

The ruling drew a strong dissent warning that the Fourth Amendment was in jeopardy if the government is given such broad rights to search electronic files.
