“I do acknowledge that the state public defender’s office has been shortchanged the last couple of years,” Arambula said Friday. Arambula, a non-practicing attorney, said he understands that cuts to the PD’s office will only create a bottleneck in processing the state’s backlog of death penalty appeals.
“I believe the subcommittee will need to address their situation,” Arambula said. “We will be very careful in looking at their needs in the future.”
That can only be good news for Hersek, whose office is facing an additional $1 million in cuts in next year’s budget. Without some help, Hersek said he’ll be forced to make layoffs next time around.
