Independent paralegals in the state’s burgeoning legal aid profession now find themselves in the sights of an unlikely sharpshooter: conservative, pro-business Republican Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer of Newport Beach, Calif.
Brewer has authored legislation reserving the title “paralegal” solely for those working under the direct supervision of an attorney and who meet specific educational and experiential requirements.
