In San Francisco's battles over gay marriage, the city has been quick to invoke high court opinions that gay rights advocates hailed as milestones. Staying far from those cases are the city's opponents, who want the dispute to focus on municipal authority. Professor Gerald Uelmen says he isn't surprised by the cases arising in the San Francisco instance, explaining: "Justice [Antonin] Scalia himself, in his dissent in Lawrence , said 'here comes gay marriage.'"
