Four Bay Area law schools posted double-digit gains in bar exam pass rates for the July 2017 test, according to school-specific numbers released by the state bar.

Fifty-one percent of first-time test-takers from Golden Gate University School of Law passed the latest exam, up from just 31 percent a year earlier. University of San Francisco School of Law saw an 18 percentage-point increase for exam rookies. Santa Clara University School of Law's pass rate rose from 66 percent in 2016 to 79 percent. UC Hastings College of the Law's success rate jumped 10 points to 61 percent.

Those numbers mirror an overall rise in the percentage of graduates from California-based, American Bar Association-accredited law schools who passed—from 62 percent in 2016 to 70 percent this year. The July 2017 exam was the first administered over two days instead of the traditional three.

Pass rates at Stanford and UC Berkeley law schools remained among the highest in the state. Ninety-six percent of first-time test-takers from Stanford passed the July 2017 test as did 89 percent from Cal. Those figures represent a five-point increase for each school over 2016.

The bar has not yet released figures for schools located outside of California.
