Pinsents' German ally signs up to tax network

Pinsent Masons' German ally, Luther, has joined Taxand, a network of independent tax advisers. As part of the change Luther has hired tax consultant Ulrich Siegemund, who will join the firm on 1 February. Siegemund, who has worked as a partner at Deloitte since leaving Luther in 2002, will be followed by a team of eight to 10 further tax specialists. The Taxand network has a member in 41 countries.

Lovells reaches total of 100 fee earners in Italy

Top 10 London firm Lovells has increased its number of fee earners in Italy to 100. The firm, which has had a presence in the country since 2000, has grown its lawyer numbers by 30% in the last 12 months. Leah Dunlop, Italian managing partner at Lovells, said: "Reaching the landmark of 100 fee earners is testament to our strategy of steady growth over the last seven years." Dunlop became Italian managing partner in late 2006 replacing Paolo Criscione, who left the firm under acrimonious circumstances.

CC promotes nine to counsel in Netherlands

Clifford Chance's Amsterdam office has appointed nine associates to the role of counsel. Corporate lawyers Gregory Crookes and Herke van Hulst, finance lawyers Sander Klaassen, Nanette Rutgers, Quirine Eenhorst and Robert Smits, tax lawyers Michiel Sunderman and Timon Reijn and arbitration lawyer Juliette Luycks took on their positions this month. Amsterdam managing partner Jan ter Haar said: "With these appointments we are introducing a position that already exists in other Clifford Chance offices to the Netherlands."

Bredin Prat makes up two to partnership

France's Bredin Prat has promoted two associates to its partnership as well as naming two new counsel in Paris. Olivier Rogivue, formerly an associate in the London and Paris offices of Slaughter and May, and Olivier Saba, a former Shearman & Sterling lawyer, joined the partnership in the corporate department on 1 January. Raed Fathallah and Kate Romain have become counsel.

Metals giant Rusal appoints ex-BP legal chief

Natural resources giant UC Rusal has appointed BP's former Russian general counsel, Kirill Alexandrov, as its new legal chief. Alexandrov joins the Russian metals giant - the world's largest producer of aluminium - from the Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), which he joined in 2005 after a two-year stint as local legal chief at BP.

London lawyers have made up around 10% of US firms' overall partnership additions in the latest promotions round. The latest firms to announce their promotions are Dechert, Jones Day and McDermott Will & Emery, which between them have named 98 lawyers as partners worldwide, although only nine of those are London based.
