Jury awards estate of bicyclist killed in truck crash $25M
A jury awarded $25 million to the parents of a student who died after she was hit by a garbage truck while on her bicycle. The estate argued that Abigail Dougherty, 20, was trying to get from the bike lane to the crosswalk when she was struck by a truck and that the truck driver failed to yield, failed to check his mirrors, failed to use his turn signal and failed to slow down as he executed his turn. Defense counsel claimed that Dougherty made a sudden turn that put her bicycle in the path of the truck and that tests showed that Dougherty had both alcohol and cocaine in her system at the time of the crash. The jury found the truck company 80 percent liable and Dougherty 20 percent liable, reducing the estate’s recovery to $20 million..

Apartment's tenant to receive $1M for fall
A jury awarded more than $1 million to a woman who claimed that she injured her spine and a knee in a fall outside of her South Pasadena apartment. The suit's plaintiff, Crystal Harvey, claimed that she slipped on grease that had been spilled outside of her apartment's entrance. She claimed that she and her husband had notified the landlord five times that day, but that the matter was not addressed. Harvey further claimed that she suffered knee injuries that necessitated three surgeries. The defense contended that Harvey should have been more attentive. The jury assigned a 70-30 liability split in Harvey's favor, so its gross award, $1,483,963.10, was reduced by 30 percent, to $1,038,774.17. A motion for a mistrial is pending. Harvey v. McKinley Gulf of Mexico, LLC Pinellas County

The U.S government is on the hook for more than $700,000 for an automobile accident involving a U.S. Department of the Interior employee. The matter dates to Jan. 9, 2017, when Sarah Crawford, then 32, was driving in Tallahassee. As Crawford entered an intersection, her car struck an oncoming pickup truck being driven by the federal worker, who was turning left across Crawford's path. Crawford claimed that the accident caused thoracic outlet syndrome: painful compression of nerves in the torso. She has been told that she will require resection of ribs to relieve the compression. She also claimed that she will require lifelong physical therapy. Judge Mark Walker, who presided over the trial, awarded damages of $702,211.79. Crawford v.
