Psilocybin Initiative Cleared for Takeoff in California

California's attorney general last Friday cleared proponents of The California Psilocybin Initiative to start collecting signatures to qualify the measure for the November 2024 ballot. The initiative would allow the retail sale of so-called magic mushrooms by April 2025.

Similar efforts to decriminalize the use of psilocybin, still classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic by the federal government, have succeeded in Oregon and several cities around the country. The drug has been studied by researchers who say its properties can help people suffering from certain mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder.
