Just about every big-firm partner has them: stories of long nights spent as a young associate, doing mind-numbing research in the firm library—memories that are not treasured but are at least vivid.
Kiss that trope goodbye. Law books are going the way of the Walkman, Betamax players and 35-millimeter cameras. And that means that fewer and fewer lawyers are visiting firm libraries and their vast collections of dusty tomes.
David McDowell, a partner at Morrison & Foerster, noticed. “Most of the junior lawyers were content to do their research online with the books and treatises but didn't spend a lot of time in the library as those of us who are older had done when we were new,” he recalls. “We felt like we were not using that space very effectively.”
