new partners

Large Texas firms made fewer new partners this year but more of them are women and more are minorities than in years past. Considering the uncertainty in the nation`s economy and the turmoil in Texas` bedrock energy industry in the wake of Enron Corp.`s bankruptcy, it`s probably not too surprising large Texas firms made fewer new partners as a whole in 2002 than in 2001. Partners Who Left Jenkens Forfeited Capital Contributions

Beginning in 2004, partners at Jenkens & Gilchrist who left the firm also left behind their capital contributions due to the firm's "contingent liabilities." Those attorneys may never see a penny of it, or they may recoup some of it, depending on what's left over after the firm covers its financial obligations since its closing last month. Roger Hayse, a former executive at Jenkens who returned to take the job of president as it liquidates, says "job one" is making sure all of the firm's creditors are paid.

BP Explosion Plaintiff's Unsettling Suit Atypical in Mass Tort Litigation

The first trial stemming from a fatal explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City, Texas, kicks off next week, but the verdict in the suit won't set a market rate for settlements, which is what typically happens in mass tort suits. Instead, the trial may help Eva Rowe, whose parents were killed in the explosion, force BP and other energy companies to improve safety practices at refineries. Rowe's attorney, plaintiffs lawyer Brent Coon, says Rowe also wants BP to make public all documents in the litigation.
