Lucky Seven: Texas Firms Make Lots of Deals

Racking up a third straight year of growth, the volume of U.S. mergers and acquisitions totaled more than $1 trillion in 2005, which provided a solid source of work for some large Texas firms. And other kinds of corporate work were also good to several of those firms. Seven Texas firms, two fewer than last year, are in the small group included on The Corporate Scorecard, an annual national ranking of firms that do the most deals, or highest-value deals, in eight specific corporate areas.

Krist should help defend BP from suits filed over a deadly explosion at the company's Texas refinery took another twist last week when a former client who had hired Krist's firm to sue BP over the explosion filed a professional negligence suit against Krist, the firm and others. Ronald Krist had negotiated settlements for Jose L. Elizondo and three other clients. Elizondo's suit could assist efforts to disqualify Krist from representing BP.

Messy litigation pitting former shareholder Fred Baron against Baron & Budd, the plaintiffs firm he founded, just got more complicated.
