Calif. Lawyers' Union Seeks End to Pay Argument

A California lawyers' union tried Friday to persuade a Sacramento County Superior Court judge to intervene in a contract squabble between the bargaining unit that represents deputy attorneys general and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration. Lawyers say the pay scales for the union's 3,400 members have eroded so badly that entry-level state prosecutors in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a starting salary of $56,088, now earn less than half of what their counterparts in other public agencies get.

California Gov. Validates Same-Sex Marriages

In a big win for gay rights groups, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation Sunday declaring that same-sex marriages performed outside of California prior to the passage of Proposition 8 are legally valid in the Golden State. The new law also clarifies that same-sex couples who married in another state after Nov. 5, 2008, must be given the same rights and benefits as opposite-sex spouses, although their unions will not be called marriages.
