You Are Known by the Company You Keep

Recently a junior-ish partner clued me in that the senior partner I work with the most closely is viewed as an out-there, very strange kind of guy who doesn`t politic and has made some enemies. I`m infuriated that by merely doing good work for this guy, I`m tarred by the same brush, one that I think is very unfair.

Is the Associate in the Next Office Billing for Lunch and Gym Time?

A first-year associate in my practice group arrives at the office after 9:30 a.m. and leaves by 6 p.m. nearly every night. In addition, she takes an hour for lunch and goes to the gym every day from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Yet her time sheets (we share a printer) reflect 9.5 hours EVERY day. I believe she is padding her hours. I am not sure what I should do or who I should approach about this. Do I have an obligation to turn her in or otherwise out her?

Closing That $14,000 Pay Gap Between Male, Female Lawyers

A preliminary report of lawyers two to three years into their careers shows that women are earning an average of $66,000, to men's $80,000. That discovery comes from the "After the JD" study, which follows 5,000 young lawyers for 10 years. The report shows that in 101- to 250-lawyer firms, women slightly outearn men -- but otherwise, across the board, figures for women are lower than for men of the same age and seniority. What are the reasons for this gap, and how can women overcome it?
