Latham makes up three City partners and one counsel in global promotions round

Latham & Watkins has promoted 22 lawyers to its partnership around the world, with three made up in the firm's London office. The trio of City promotions, which will take effect in the New Year (1 January), come in the US firm's London project finance, employment and capital markets practices. The three new partners are: Matthew Brown, whose practice focuses on project development and project finance; Catherine Drinnan, an employment and benefits lawyer; and Scott Colwell, who specialises in international capital markets.

BarCap revamps legal team as in-house lawyers depart

Barclays Capital has rejigged its legal function in the wake of two high-profile appointments earlier this year, while rival Deutsche Bank has lost its deputy general counsel for the UK and Western Europe. CMS Hasche Sigle has appointed Dr Hubertus Kolster as its new managing partner, following the firm's annual partner conference last week (13 November). Kolster is set to succeed current incumbent Cornelius Brandi, who has managed the firm for a total of 12 years. Kolster, a corporate partner in the firm's Frankfurt office, specialises in corporate and business law, as well as M&A. He has been the firm's Frankfurt managing partner since 2009.

White & Case City office sees firmwide costs share rise 60%

White & Case's London office was charged around £7.4m towards running the firm in 2009 by New York - an increase of nearly 60% on the previous year. The US firm's UK limited liability partnership (LLP) accounts for 2009 show the London office paid out in excess of £7.4m in contributions towards its share of joint costs, up from slightly less than £4.7m in 2009.

Ashurst has enhanced its European equity capital markets (ECM) team with the hire of a Dewey & LeBoeuf partner in Frankfurt. Matthias Von Oppen, who will join the firm next month (1 December), has spent three years as a corporate partner at the US firm's Frankfurt base. After qualifying at White & Case in Frankfurt in 1999, he was seconded to Swiss banking giant UBS, as well as the firm's London office. He made partner in 2004 and moved to Dewey in 2007.

Number of students on law courses drops for first time in three years

The number of students accepted onto law courses this year saw a slight dip for the first time in three years, according to new research by admissions service UCAS. The total number of students starting a law course at university or college in September 2010 fell by 2.6% to 16,890, down from the 2009 high point of 17,346. The figure had risen steadily until this year, with the number of students accepted onto law courses this year now up around 13% on 2006's figure.

Ogier Caymans chief set to take reigns of Hong Kong office

Ogier has appointed finance partner James Bergstrom as the offshore firm's new Hong Kong managing partner. The appointment, which will take effect in the New Year, will see Bergstrom relocate to Hong Kong from the Cayman Islands, where he has been managing partner for eight years.
