A change in the private equity guard is opening a few gates

Last month Clifford Chance (CC) private equity veteran James Baird retired from the firm after more than 25 years as a partner. Clearly the departure is unlikely to spell anything like disaster for a buyout practice as dominant as CC's, but it has certainly got the private equity sewing circle talking. And, no doubt, hoping for opportunities to tighten links with some of Baird's clients, such as CVC.

Slaughter and May has marginally increased its associate salaries as of this month after delaying its biannual pay review due to recent public holidays. The firm, the first of the magic circle to announce its 2011 salaries, has opted for modest increases of between 1.5% and 3% for junior associates. Rates for trainees and newly-qualified lawyers remain unchanged; however, all lawyers will also continue to move through the lockstep as normal.

Asset finance - increasingly not for every banking team

Recent weeks have seen no less than five asset finance partner moves announced, with Berwin Leighton Paisner, Ince & Co, Mayer Brown, and, most notably, Hogan Lovells all moving to strengthen their City practices. While the timing of the appointments is more down to coincidence than any single driver in the market, the moves illustrate the differing approaches to asset finance across large law firms.
