The Hidden Solutions at Law Firms and How to Extract Them

Wouldn't it be nice if firms could use technology to somehow use a sample of relevant documents to find more "like" documents out of 100,000 for document production? Wouldn't it be nice if law firms had document automation tools to efficiently help create appropriate documents and save the client money? Wouldn't it be nice if law firms could use artificial intelligence (AI) to help with analyzing contracts? While some of these ideas may have seemed like science fiction not too long ago, they are very much a reality in today's legal industry.

Spreading Them Thin—an Assistant's Balancing Act

I think I'm considered a (younger) Generation X-er. I still remember why a pencil is relevant to a cassette tape. I've also felt the pain of lining up dot matrix printer paper, recognizing the sound of dial-up internet, and having to wait at least an hour for holiday pictures to develop. The horror! In the end, I was always kind and would indeed rewind. By the time I graduated from law school in 2004, technology was on a fast pace that would revolutionize the way we communicate and work. I feel I am lucky because my generation still remembers a world where things were a bit slower and less instantaneous, but because we have grown with the technology, we are pretty good at adapting to the latest devices and apps.

Remodeling IG with Foundational Data Building Blocks

Information governance (IG), as a concept within the legal landscape and other industries has been around for some time now, and we are starting to see law firms and companies implement IG programs. On one end, some programs focus on IG related to pre-litigation data and information management with the objective to minimize e-discovery-related costs. By implementing policies to regulate and manage organizational data to know where the data is, who owns it and how long it should be retained until defensible disposition will help in properly defining a narrower corpus of data that might be relevant to a litigation. Although this focus of IG is important, it is only one layer of a collective enterprisewide framework.

Training Tomorrow's Lawyer: The Evolution of Legal Education

Simplifying Documents: A Paperless Life and Law Firm

I detest any physical mail I get in my mailbox, at home or at my firm. What is the point? I get most of my news online, use online or automated bill pay, and ignore promotional materials. I get important messages via email and manage them separately. Paper documents are clunky, they take up a lot of space to store and the information in them is hard to manage or share.
