Number of Florida attorneys doing pro bono work has remained stagnant since 2000

The number of Florida attorneys donating their time to pro bono work has remained stagnant since the start of the decade, according to a recent study commissioned by the Florida Supreme Court. The study showed that the percentage of attorneys reporting pro bono work was the same in 2006 as it was in 2000 — 52%. During the same period, Florida pro bono programs such as legal aid reported a 30% decline in the number of attorneys who volunteered through their agencies.

A federal judge in Miami gave final approval on Wednesday to a $410 million class action settlement with Bank of America over its overdraft fee practices, including attorney fees totaling $123 million.The 30 percent contingency fee, which includes expenses, was granted to more than 30 law firms including three in South Florida: Podhurst Orseck in Miami, the Law Offices of Bruce Rogow in Fort Lauderdale and Grossman Roth in Coral Gables.
