Squire Sanders makes up UK seven in 18-strong partnership round

Squire Sanders Hammonds has announced its first partner promotions since the firm's transatlantic merger, with 18 lawyers made up to the partnership. The bulk of the new promotions come in the UK, with five in the City and two in Leeds. In legacy Hammonds' last promotion round, no London lawyers were made up in a global round of eight. The remaining 11 promotions in this year's round are spread across the firm's Cleveland, Phoenix, Prague, Columbus, Madrid and Brussels offices.

The long delayed agreement to create a single European patent has this month received a downbeat reaction, with intellectual property (IP) advisers arguing that legal opposition to a European Union-wide patent court will hamstring the venture. Ministers from 25 EU states on 10 March approved the creation of a single European patent - a unitary title set to operate across much of the EU. The move has been hailed by supporters as a step forward in the decades-long fight to streamline Europe's patchwork patent regime.

Trio of firms advise as Tchenguiz brothers win right to sue Kaupthing

The Tchenguiz brothers are free to push ahead with claims worth more than £1bn against failed Icelandic bank Kaupthing in the English courts, after a ruling earlier today which handed roles to a trio of firms. Mr Justice Burton today (16 March) dismissed Kaupthing's attempts to strike out the claims and challenge the jurisdiction of the English court, paving the way for the English High Court to hear damages claims by the Tchenguiz Family Trust and the Tchenguiz Discretionary Trust, together worth more than £1bn.
