The Senate Public Safety Committee voted 6-3 Wednesday to approve Senate Bill 68, which would apply Georgia's racketeer influenced and corrupt organizations law to dogfighting. Applying the state RICO law would result in prison sentences of five to 20 years for convictions, up from one to 10 years now.

The Kansas Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court ruling that a sheriff's deputy did violate a man's Fourth Amendment rights by attempting a public safety stop that turned into an arrest, drawing a strong dissent that argued "the state failed to present objective, specific, and articulable facts" showing the stop had been lawful.

"Consumers facing repossession and collection actions on their vehicles deserve clear and transparent information from auto lenders," said Massachusetts Attorney General Joy Campbell. Her office noted that more than 500 borrowers across Massachusetts are expected to be eligible for relief under the $7.6 million settlement, which includes about $5.5 million in debt relief funds.

Right now, a first offense of pimping or paying for sex, legally called pandering, is a high and aggravated misdemeanor under Georgia law, requiring at least 72 hours in jail. The bill makes both crimes felonies punishable by 1 to 10 years in prison, although the bill doesn't bar a judge from suspending a sentence or ordering someone onto probation.
